Italian Wine & Cheese Pairing

On Thursday, September 26th, Van Hook Cheese and Jersey Wine & Spirits will co-host one of their monthly pairing classes with two instructors who bring the class through five pairings. They’ll discuss the history, production techniques, tasting notes, and thought that goes into each component of the pairings that you’ll taste.  Italy produces a stunning variety of wine and cheese and there’s something for everyone! Hopefully you discover a new wine and cheese to share with your friends and family.

Van Hook Cheese and Grocery is a family-owned cheese and specialty grocery store located in downtown Jersey City.  They focus on high quality and local products.  If you have a party to attend this fall, we highly suggest purchasing a cheese platter through them.  Prices range from $100-$150 and are sure to impress! You can also skip the lines and pre-order cheese which is cut the day of pick up to ensure freshness.  Van Hook Cheese also has outstanding grilled cheese sandwiches, which are served on sourdough Pullman with hand-churned butter from Normandy.

Jersey Wine & Spirits is a first class liquor store that offers a wide selection of wines, beer and spirits.  They have a very knowledgeable staff and reasonable prices. They have excellent reviews on Yelp and are definitely a favorite in Jersey City.

Celebrating Fall in Jersey City

The first fall weekend in Jersey City is looking beautiful and there’s some great events happening right outside of The Beacon!  Whether you want to enjoy a nice BYOB French dinner outside, throw back some beers at Oktoberfest or sip on a Guinness while you enjoy bangers and mash, you can find it all outside The Beacon.

Vogue Café will be hosting their “A Little Taste of France” fall dinner on September 27th at 6PM on their lovely backyard patio.  The event is BYOB and you can expect delicious traditional French cuisine and live music.  Kids are also welcome.  You can RSVP here.

Now that it’s officially fall you can have your first fall beer of the weekend on Friday, September 27th at Zeppelin Hall’s Oktoberfest. They’ll also be serving German cuisine such as Bratwurst, German pretzels, chicken schnitzel and have live German party bands.  Oktoberfest runs at Zeppelin Hall until October 20th.  For more information visit their website.

On Saturday, September 28th join the community in the annual Jersey City Irish Festival at Exchange place on the waterfront from 1-8PM.  They’ll have Irish food and beer (and of course Jameson), live music, bag-pipes and traditional Celtic gifts to purchase and you can enjoy it all while taking in the Manhattan skyline.

All About Downtown Street Fair

Downtown Jersey City’s premier event of the season is right around the corner! The annual All About Downtown Street Fair began in 2011 and featured over a hundred vendors selling a variety of products ranging from handmade jewelry to one of a kind artwork. Seven years later in 2018, the event brought over 40,000 people into downtown Jersey City and over 200 vendors selling everything from vintage clothes and handmade soaps to gyros and empanadas.

This is a fun filled all-day event. Local bars and restaurants set up outdoor beer gardens and rum bars and attendees dance to a variety of music. There’s no shortage of food as vendors feature cuisines from around the world that prove Jersey City’s title as the Most Diverse City in the United States!

If you’re planning on this being your “cheat day” we suggest starting with the No Forks Given booth.  These sandwiches are over the top and stuffed to the rim.  Try their famous fried chicken sandwich with special sauce and pickled onions.  You can also find their food truck at 2 Grand Street in Jersey City.  After your tasty sandwich head over to Glazed and Confused for some delicious donuts, canivale for their crazy milk shakes, or Freetown Road Project for some sweet banana cake.  This is Freetown Road’s first All About Downtown Street Fair, but you may have seen them at the Jersey City Night Market in Journal Square.  Chef Claude Lewis is the executive chef at Porta in Jersey City and also won Chopped on Food Network in March 2019.

Labor Day Weekend in Jersey City

Labor Day is the unofficial “end of summer” and if you’re staying in Jersey City instead of hitting the beach, we have two activities that are sure to end your summer on a great note!

Liberty State Park –Liberty State Park is a green oasis in our very own Jersey City. With the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as a spectacular backdrop, Liberty State Park is one of the state’s most dramatic parks.  Grab some friends and enjoy a picnic or a BBQ and enjoy the beautiful views and fresh air!  If you have a larger group that wants to have a BBQ,  there are seven open-air, group picnic areas available for reservation. Each are equipped with eight picnic tables and one large, charcoal grill. There is no fee for the use of a group picnic area; however, a permit must be obtained prior to use.

William Wall – There are still some tickets available to board the William Wall boat on August 31st which is anchored in the middle of the Hudson River.  This is a hidden gem in Jersey City and is the perfect activity for Labor Day weekend! The boat has a full bar and you can bring your own food.  Your ticket covers a round-trip on their Admiral’s Launch water taxi from the Manhattan Yacht Club in Jersey City to the Honorable William Wall and back.  On your way back you’ll get dropped off at Surf City, where you can end the night with a few more drinks.

National Cheese and Wine Day in Jersey City

Move over National Tequila Day, National Wine and Cheese Day is here! National Cheese and Wine Day originated in 2014 and is a day of pairing your favorite (or new) wine and cheeses which is a regionalized tradition.

The day encourages us to try wines and cheese in combinations we’ve never tried before.  Sampling the complexities in sweetness and acidity and comparing them at a tasting makes for an enjoyable experience. When we add friends to the adventure, the day becomes a celebration, too! Below are a few places in Jersey City where you can pair wine and cheese and feel like you’re in Napa Valley, France or Spain!

Third & Vine – If you love small plates, great wine and cocktails, and fancy cheese plates, you’ll have to check this spot out.  They have 4 categories of cheeses to choose from: soft, stinky, firm and blue and 8 different meats to pair it with.  You can also choose from 3 of their daily cheese and chatcuterie boards.

Satis Bistro – This restaurant serves brunch and dinner and also has a separate connecting wine bar that is gorgeous! Whether you want to sit at a table and order food, wine and cheese or just sit at the bar for a cheese plate and vino, you can do it all here.

Madame Claude Bis – An authentic French restaurant that has live gypsy jazz, French cheese and wines and a great ambiance.

Don’t forget to use #NationalWineAndCheeseDay when posting on social media.
