Celebrating Both Your Parents in Jersey City This Father’s Day

If your Mother’s Day was like most of us, you probably had to forgo the flowers and the brunch this year and settle for a Mother’s Day visit by Zoom. With dear old Dad’s special day coming up this June, we’re sure many Fathers are ready to share a bit of the glory this year since their female counterparts had to skip out on this year’s celebration. Here’s a fun way to combine Mother’s and Father’s Day this June, all with easy, safe things you can do around your Jersey City apartment.

The first thing you should do is pick a nice place to celebrate. While we understand many residents may still not feel safe having extended family come into their apartments homes, we do recommend some of our local parks for an outdoors, socially distance celebration. NJ Parks are open again and waiting for visitors – as long as everyone is respectful, wears their masks, and keeps a safe distance from fellow visitors. Liberty State Park is a great option for both Mom and Dad, as it has sweeping views of Manhattan, shady spots for picnic areas, and plenty of room if Dad wants to throw around the football. Just make sure to bring a blanket, as picnic tables and other facilities are still closed to public access.

While most restaurants are still not open for guests, most are open for take-out, so bringing a picnic to the park has never been easier! While usually Mother’s Day and Father’s Day might have very different meals, we suggest going with something everyone can enjoy and a New Jersey staple at that – diner food! Liberty Park Café and Diner is right across the street from the Park, so you can order your food, pick it up, and still set out the picnic blanket while it’s still hot. With cuisines as diverse as our city, there’s something for everything at this little Jersey City eatery.

Not sure what to give mom and dad as a gift? With most retail stores still closed, shopping can be difficult these days. As for mom, you can never go wrong with flowers, and lucky for us, plant nurseries have stayed open during quarantine! 14th Street Garden Center is Jersey City is still open, and they are offering curbside pickup if you call in your flower order ahead of time. However, shopping is still an option as well, as long as you wear a mask.

What about Dad? Finding a gift for the patriarch of the family is always difficult, especially when you can’t walk around our local malls to shop for something fun. How about a growler of local craft beer for your day in the park? 902 Brewing in Jersey City is still open for curbside pickup, and Dad will love one of their summery seasonal beers, or one of their regular go-to’s like Jersey Lager.
